photoblog image Humber Sceptre

Humber Sceptre

This is the Mk1 I think and would be about 1963. Based on the Super Minx it's a bit of Badge engineering. Humbers used to be fairly luxurious cars but this is just a tarted up family car.

Having said that it is not a bad looking car. My Dad had the Super Minx come to think of it.

I like it!
Bill Phillips: I rather like it too, although it was outdated even then!
Quelle jolie voiture !
Bill Phillips: It is quite handsome in its own way but even by the standards of the 60s it was outdated

I quite liked the Humber design of cars Bill, they had a soft elegance about them.
Bill Phillips: When you think this was around at the same time as the Cortina it looks very staid and old-fashioned by comparison

Blimey - this is in showroom condition!

Compared to other horrors of the time it comes across as a very good looking machine. I haven't seen one for years..
Bill Phillips: It was indeed. There were plenty of terrible cars around in the 60s

I had forgotten all about Humbers, Bill. Is that you in the background?
Bill Phillips: Happily it is not Lisl grin
It is a fine looking car, I would have been happy to have it at the time. My Dad had the standard model Hillman Minx, not a bad car at the time. My first car was a 1954 Hillman Minx with a side-valve engine, I believe it was 1500cc.
Bill Phillips: My Dad's last car was a Super Minx Estate in 1967. I had an old hillman husky at one time.

I inherited my ex-father-in-law''s Singer Vogue on his death; I think it was fairly similar to this from what I can remember, I don't recall it having twin headlights.
Bill Phillips: The vogue had twin headlights but the singer Gazelle had single lights.
How vehicle design has changed ...
Bill Phillips: and the technology in them
