Maybe they are scoping out their new territory (when the glaciers melt it may be seaside, hehe!) I like this photo partly because I am a bird lover (think they all are beautiful), but I like the architecture framing the bird in this shot.

When you stare at them like this, Bill, they're really quite stately birds. To fly inland all those miles makes them even more!

Bill Phillips: I have to confess I detest them. They are noisy, dirty and aggressive birds and do not belong in cities. I think they have moved inland (and indeed breed in cities now) because of the decline in fishing and the presence of landfill rubbish sites which are a major source of food for them

They are nothing but a confounded nuisance these days. Bath is full of them. If I called them Seagulls my birdwatching friends would have apoplexy - so that's a good idea!

An interesting meeting! I like to observe their flight and to hear their noisy, excited crying, then you have always the feeling to be really at the sea. We know in German a poem of Christian Morgenstern who gave these seagulls an oldfashioned eternal name, a name that English people know too!

The Seagulls

The seagulls by their looks suggest
that Emma is their name;
they wear a white and fluffy vest
and are the hunter's game.

I never shoot a seagull dead;
their life I do not take.
I like to feed them gingerbread
and bits of raisin cake.

I agree, Bill. When I grew up in Bath there were no seagulls. They were at Weston-Super-Mare. Then they were in Bristol. Now they are in Bath. Could humans have something to do with this?

Bill Phillips: I'm sure it is. they are following food supplies. Once it was the fishing fleets, now it is landfill sites.

Ha ha... you can't even rely on Gulls these days, eh Bill?

Bill Phillips: My mother (who lived at the time in Exmouth) would never have it that these were gulls up here. She insisted they were pigeons!

Seagulls really mean seaside to me, and to me they are stately birds so graceful in flight. BUT my mother moved to Margate Kent seaside) and discovered how aggressive, dirty and noisy they can be. It was unbelievable the things the residents did to keep them off their roofs and chimneys and elsewhere.

lol yes saw plenty of these over the weekend and they are messy for sure, just missed me and the daughter with one deposit by a couple of foot lol, great composition Bill.

I think they are opportunities birds and some seem to enjoy the easier picking in towns and cities now. They are attractive but they are noisy devils!

Bill Phillips: They are scavengers basically and I don't find them particularly attractive.

We have them here too, but not many - they seem to congregate near rubbish tips and occasionaly you seem them on ploughed fields. I like to hear them when I'm at the seaside but they do make an awful mess!
