He was playing the flute,
His back to the wall.
A sad, gentle melody floating
along the arcade.
I didn't stop to listen
or pause to leave a coin.
I was in a hurry.
melody fading as I passed.
wish I had stopped.
If only for a few moments.

Musician
He was playing the flute,
comments (30)
Nobody stopped to hear him
Though he played so sweet and high They knew he had never Been on their t.v. So they passed his music by I meant to go over and ask for a song Maybe put on a harmony... I heard his refrain As the signal changed He was playing real good, for free...
Bill Phillips: Great Mike. With your verse and VZ's and Richard's my humble effort is turning into a full blown poem!
But you DID stop, Bill. He played, you saw, and you "conquered" the moment. The lighting is just perfect against the shadowy foreground.
Bill Phillips: Only long enough to take the picture! Thanks for your comments as always Ginnie.
…this melody didn’t vanish to nowhere
it travelled to where all the melodies of the street musicians flow a tiny brook of a flute tune it joined other brooks to form a huge river i wish I could hear that symphonic climax when the river finally reaches the ocean…
Bill Phillips: Thanks Viktor. With Mike's, Richard's and your efforts, we have quite a good piece of poetry!
Tinkling tune
Bland faces turn Curious stares Footsteps hesitate Glance at collecting box Footsteps move on Tinkling tune ...
Bill Phillips: Thanks Richard. With VZ, Mike and you, my little effort is growing into a poem!
Greta shot Bill, very atmospheric
Yes I quite like this, Bill.
His music it was awful he couldn't play a tune he blew and blew and blew that thing and made the people fume If i should tell him something to help him where he sat I'd tell him wearing that helmet Just makes him look a fool.
Bill Phillips: I just knew I could rely on you Chad. I assume fool is a euphemism for a word that rhymes with hat and starts with a P!
certainly can not do poems m8, what i will say is this is one of your best for me m8,full of intrigue and atmosphere, well done Bill
Bill Phillips: Thanks Tim. Poetry is not compulsory! Though I have been amazed by the quality of the contributions! I'm just pleased you like this
Great image, Bill. Love the way the light just catches the musician and the way you have focused on him. Lol at Chad - a poet laureate in waiting!
Ingrid
Bill Phillips: You can always rely on Chad! Glad you like this. It took ages to get the lighting as I wanted it!
You are a real poet !!! This shot and your poem are just beautiful ... I love the way you focused on the musician almost like if he was in HIS world ...
In my likeys ...
Bill Phillips: Thank you so much Ann. I am a very occasional writer of poetry!
Great moody shot Bill. I like the way you did highlight the musician with the focus and the lighting. Well done.
Very nice poem.
Bill Phillips: Thanks Richard. The additional verses that people have added are amazing!
~ i wished to stay, yet went my way
as i, you see the piper play to hear his tune, don’t wish too soon nor wish my way away ~
Bill Phillips: Thanks Terry. You lot have added some great verses!
Bill Ilove this photo I must try street and people shots,It appears many sc members are poets, didnt know it was a requirement.good stuff
Bill Phillips: LOL! Can you imagine if we had to make all our comments rhyme!? I was amazed by all the additional verses...and how good they are! I'm just happy you like the picture.
I like this Bill: the way you have brought the virtually invisible to prominence
Bill Phillips: It took me quite a while to get this how I wanted it, so I'm pleased that you like it
He play out his life,
in majors and minors. Alone in the crowd each detail revealed. His bittersweet story floating softly on air.
Bill Phillips: Thanks Kathryn. I shall try and put this poem all together! You are a poetical lot out there!
Nicely spotted and captured Bill.
Bill Phillips: Thanks very much Bernie
Who wins first prize, Bill? Go on I know it's me. I see that Chris Phillips chickened out on the poetry contest.
Bill Phillips: It is so hard to decide so to avoid accusations of favouritism I have awarded 1st prize to myself!
Excellent PS work here! This is really a wonderful shot!
Bill Phillips: Thank you very much Martin.
Excellent shot here Bill, and the light on the musician is absolutely brilliant. I should put the verses together and publish the poem if I was you!
Bill Phillips: Funny you should say that Brian....
You did a superb job here, love the sharp detail of the flute player, I am sorry, no poem for me too, I like Brian's suggestion.
Bill Phillips: Thanks Astrid..I'm working on the poem
Fantastic treatment...really good.
Bill Phillips: Thanks very much Dave
Bill, I think this is outstanding. The way you have used the light is wonderful. (:o)
Love the way you have drawn out the poets on here, too. (:o)
Bill Phillips: Thanks Roz..the poetry has amazed me!
Great artistic (and poetic) work !!
Bill Phillips: Thanks Zeb. I love all the poetry people have taken the time to add
I'd love to see the exif for this shot.
I know you might have edited it, but I think it's just about perfect - both the mono and the way you've isolated the whistle player from everything around him.
Bill Phillips: The original picture was taken on a Pentax K100d super at f8 and 1/90th sec. ISO 400 and 55mm (so about 80mm equiv on 35mm film). It was in colour. There were white areas which I needed to darken and then I added the light to the figure. I wanted just the musician sharp so had to blur the rest of the image.
Perfect lighting Bill and nice use of dof. Really like this.
Bill Phillips: Thanks Aussie. I confess most of what you see was done on the computer!
I likey
Bill Phillips: Thank you. I have put all the poetry together for today...just as a thank you
Cracking,it looks good enough to be staged!
Bill Phillips: Staged!!! As if!!
Wonderful effect. Everyone else has already said it all by now, but I'll just add - it's a unique and striking image. The addition of poetry on the next day's photo is magical.
Bill Phillips: Thanks very much Jewlya. I thought all the poetry deserved to be put together!
J'aime beaucoup
Bill Phillips: Merci. Je suis très heureux vous l'aime. Que vous pour visiter mon emplacement.
very moody Bill, super shot. mal
Bill Phillips: Thanks very much Mal. I'm delighted you like this
just a drop of light on the subject...very nice!!
Bill Phillips: Thank you, that was the idea and I think it worked
