Bill Phillips: smile They are quite something Elizabeth and if you have never seen them even photographs don't make it easy to realise what they did. From one side they look like normal houses until you walk in and find you are in a cave!!

Maybe short of windows, Bill, but totally charming!
Bill Phillips: The other side has more Ginne. They are really quite light inside
It's a great way to build a house... it saves on building materials... but it's very labour intensive Bill....petersmile

I take it sandstone isn't pervious grin
Bill Phillips: It is a porous and soft rock as far as I know which makes it easily workable. I don't think damp was a problem here
I wonder if they got damp? Must visit these
Bill Phillips: I think sandstone is usually porous but i imagine with fires and ventilation they were dry. Certainly when we looked round all looked dry!

No I expected the hills to be much deeper than shown here. The white paint really makes the strata stand out.

I wonder if they looked so good when they were lived in
Bill Phillips: Probably not quite but they were well maintained and improved over the years
