Thought I'd try black and white with this one. I think the building on the left is where the old Victorian main post office was..shame they knocked it down.

Good God Bill: this is an unholy architectural mess!
Bill Phillips: Beautifully summed up Chris!
There sure is a mix of old and new here, Bill. It kinda looks like the alien in the background is the orchestrator o this ..."mess," yes.
Bill Phillips: Mess is the only word for it.
OLd world new and comunication. good capture
Bill Phillips: Thanks...sadly lovely it is not!
I like the strong contrast here.
Bill Phillips: Thank you Florence
B&W certainly helps make sense out of the conflicting styles - I like the catch of the light in the windows on the rhs, balances the shot nicely. Tilt of central building is a tad distracting - would benefit from a bit of skew correction of the bottom edge.
Bill Phillips: Tis a bit out, I should have straightened it up. As a penance I have straightened the original and it does look better so you are spot on Mike!
What a hotch-potch of building styles in one little corner! These kind of shots are difficult to take, with the high contrast between light and shade, so you have done well to keep most of the shadow detail.
Ingrid
Bill Phillips: Thanks Ingrid. I'm a novice at black and white so all comments like yours and Mikes are very helpful.
Man I thought they study for many years to be allowed to build buildings, who the h.. is blind here...you spotted this mess and captured it very well....love the sun/shadow here.
Bill Phillips: I'm afraid Birmingham suffered very badly from the "planners" of the 60's, although the building on the left is new, so clearly they still haven't entirely learnt!
This is an architectural disaster. Very well captured Bill. I like the contrast
Bill Phillips: Thanks Richard...disaster is about right
An interesting phoptograph of the city old and new. Works well in black and white, Bill.
Bill Phillips: Thanks Chad...it is too confused in colour.
As the others have said Bill what a mix of architecture. Is that another Post Office Tower in the background?
Bill Phillips: It is indeed...mustn't say too much about it because Dave Wilkins works for BT!
I agree with the above what more is there to say Bill??
Bill Phillips: I'm sure the Dutch would have a word for it. Or maybe 2 words
Afschuwelijke gebouwen?
Indeed what a strange mixum-gathering of styles. Although I can't say anything bad about the overcrowded comms tower behind...they pay my salary, I work for BT Ireland
Bill Phillips: We could be diplomatic and say it does not detract from the overall beauty of the scene David
Glad we, well probably the likes of Mike more than me have got you converting to B&W. I just love the black and white genre ... though from my recent postings you may not think that. For me there is too much contrast. I would have tried more mid-tones to let the whole gang of buildings have a fair chance to shout ''me me me''. Keep them coming Bill. richard
Bill Phillips: Thanks very much for the comments Richard. I like b&w and enjoy having a dabble, so your tips are very welcome.
Hi Bill
Looks like John (urban8) and yourself have managed to capture the same shot today!
Bill Phillips: Hi Bernie..I just popped over to have a look...snap! If you will forgive the feeble joke!
it looks like a photomontage! i like the black and white contrast. well captured
Bill Phillips: It's for real Seb..honest!
J'adore cette vue en N&B. Amicalement. Francis
Bill Phillips: Merci de vos commentaires très aimables
fine example Bill of the new and the old, the one on the corner must be going on 90 years at a guess, and that central building must be millimeters out
Bill Phillips: Thanks Tim...but out it is! Yes probably more, as it certainly Victorian I would think.
Nice use of the light and shadows amid these buildings.
Bill Phillips: Thanks Jewlya. I'm still grappling with b&w
I like annie's description it is a hotch-potch of building styles. I cannot imagine that the kids of today will look at any of the current styles of metal and glass with any fondness.
Bill Phillips: True, mind you a lot of people despised Victorian architecture so who knows
The planners really knew what they were doing when they put this hotch potch of buildings together
Bill Phillips: Pity none of the rest of us can work it out!
I love this in B&W!
Bill Phillips: Thank you Helen. It didn't work in colour at all!
As we're both snapping the same scene, Bill (http://urban8photo.shutterchance.com/photoblog/136394.htm), I thought I'd pop over to say hi!
And looks like your image is far more popular - 22 comments v's just 2 on mine!
Bill Phillips: Hi John. In which case they don't know what they are missing!
