photoblog image Fields of battle....

Fields of battle....

lands of peace. An outdoor exhibition featuring photographs of some of the sites of the battlefields of World War 1 . It is accompanied by some moving text and statistics relating to the horror of that war and the consequences that are still being felt today.

There is one wonderful quote recorded which I found very moving.

In 1934, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk wrote the famous words that reached out to the mothers of his former enemies.

“Those heroes that shed their blood

And lost their lives.

You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country.

Therefore, rest in peace.

There is no difference between the Johnnies

And the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side

Here in this country of ours,

You, the mothers,

Who sent their sons from far away countries

Wipe away your tears,

Your sons are now lying in our bosom

And are in peace

After having lost their lives on this land they have

Become our sons as well”.

This does look very interesting Bill, and what a fine quote that is.
Bill Phillips: We spent about 2 hours reading the text and looking at the pictures. It was very impressive

those are some wonderful words

the display feels like such a modern contrast against the structures in the backdrop

it is as if that day and this day meet in your image
Bill Phillips: Behind me are some very modern buildings. Worcester is a mix of old and new. Some of the old is very old
Very powerful.
Bill Phillips: As I said to Frank we spent a couple of hours here. Reading about WW1 is sobering, and if you are English a lot of what happened afterwards is our fault!
Certainement une exposition très intéressante.
Bill Phillips: It was very impressive Martine and very moving

Ataturk's words are very comforting and humane
Bill Phillips: It brought a lump to my throat to read them If only Turkey had a man of his stature now....or indeed many other countries

This must be a very touching exhibition.
Bill Phillips: We were there for about 2 hours Brian. It was quite something
Wonderful, I have seen an exhibition like this Bath. Showing images from around the world.
Bill Phillips: We were very impressed Chad. Some of the statistics are almost beyond comprehension...and yet we have learned nothing
