The Hive

Hard to believe that it is already 6 years since the Hive in Worcester opened. The first (and I think still the only) joint University / Public library in the UK.

Some people hate it and some love it but there is no denying it is a tremendous resource. Personally I still don't like the building but I have become used to it.

I am in the "no" camp, but I am always glad to see new libraries...
Bill Phillips: It is an excellent library

i don't care for the architectural style or the gold color, but i do love libraries and believe higher education is a necessity
Bill Phillips: It is an excellent library but I have never liked the building

Je n'aime pas du tout la forme de ce bâtiment.
Bill Phillips: It is a building I have got used to but I can't say I will ever like it
Not my cup of tea... but a good library is invaluable!
Bill Phillips: It is a fine library but like you I am not keen on the building. I have got used to it though

It is certainly an odd looking place but I must say I rather approve of conjoining the university with the real world
Bill Phillips: It is not ideal from a student point of view but there is one big benefit. Because it has to be open 7 days a week for students and until late evening the public gets the same. compare that with the new library in Birmingham which is closed on a Sunday

I saw this Hive with my own eyes and I like it, too. It is a fine library, open on 7 days, like our university library in Münster.
Bill Phillips: It is a bit of a Marmite building Philine. You either love it or hate it. I do not like the building but it is a good library.
I've got to admit I don't find the shape very appealing to be honest. To save money the borough council in Loughborough is planning to make the towns somewhat large library a 'smart' library for some of the week, I'll leave you to work out what that means.
Bill Phillips: Most of the books are self issue these days....I have so many books in my garage I seldom go to the library.
I like it. Seems warm and tight.
Bill Phillips: It is a fine library but I don't like the building. It doesn't fit for me
this photo alone doesn't give me enough to decide as a modern architect whether I like it or not.

Like the idea that it is a public and university library.

Not sure about all our state university libraries policies but the University of Georgia Library does allow local citizens to obtain library cards for borrowing books and the library I think is still open 7 days a week to anyone who enters it.
Bill Phillips: I have some other pictures of the hive which I think I posted on Shutterchance a while back.

I vaguely remember you mentioning the HIVE before and sharing photos.

We have a wonderful library in our small town of Halesworth. Though it doesn’t have research facilities and an extensive archive.
Bill Phillips: It would be a national disgrace if we lose our libraries
