The pedestrians seem quite unconcerned that the thing might collapse on them at any moment, Bill.
Bill Phillips: It cost £189 million Ray so perhaps that reassures them

I am very impressed with this beautiful, elegant building. I remember that it was mentioned also in our newspaper.
Bill Phillips: It cost £189 million which is about 6 times as much as the Hive in Worcester. Unlike the hive it doesn't open 7 days a week and the daytime opening hours are shorter

"a flagship project for the city's redevelopment. It has been described as the largest public library in the United Kingdom, the largest public cultural space in Europe, and the largest regional library in Europe. 2,414,860 million visitors came to the library in 2014 making it the 10th most popular visitor attraction in the UK."
Bill Phillips: Ironically they had to reduce the opening hours and make staff redundant to save money. And other local libraries have been closed.

With the resurgence of the Northern Powerhouses, and London the flagship, I feel Birmingham could have an identity crisis.
Bill Phillips: The media generally doesn't seem to realise Birmingham exists. Often you will see reports on an issue from London, Manchester and Newcastle but ignoring Britain's second largest city. Very odd

And the Library in Bath is being closed!!!!!!!!!!
Bill Phillips: That is terrible!
interesting composition of shapes and details

At the same time very, very, very busy design: grille, pavement, so many different styles of clothing.

So this is larger than the Pompidou Center in Paris?
Bill Phillips: I have heard it described as a tarted up multistory car park. I don't know how it compares size-wise with the Pompidou centre. I have warmed to it as a building.
Strange cladding? i think it is great.
Bill Phillips: I didn't like it initially but have warmed to it somewhat.
Haven't been in B'ham since it was built - the (fairly new) 'old" one was a bit brutalist, I recall.
Bill Phillips: It was and was never actually finished as I recall. It was meant to be faced with Portland stone but they ran out of money. It was a hideous building
I like the cladding...
Bill Phillips: I have warmed to it Larry.

This looks to be like one of those very clever artist's impression of what the building will look like when built. I can recall the old central library; very uninspiring and I'm sure that my local library had Moore books. Philine' research is interesting.
Bill Phillips: The old library was horrible. This is impressive inside by all accounts. I have warmed to the outside. It perhaps belongs in the new Birmingham
I don't think that this cladding will be a fire risk.
Bill Phillips: Happily not Comrade
Kinda cool isn't it!
Bill Phillips: It is certainly different
