It looks like the church cat cleans her claws on this pillow, Bill.
Bill Phillips: That is a possible explanation Ray
the cushion looks just fine Bill... love your framing....petersmile
Bill Phillips: It's got holes in it Peter!! Penny would never stand for that grin
Perhaps they keep it as a memento of a favorite person / pet who tore it?
Bill Phillips: What a nice thought E

...erm... maybe that cushion is already 200 years old and nobody dares to touch it, it might fall apart. I love the angle of this picture. So much details to see.
Bill Phillips: I reckon it came from British Home stores Astrid

Such a pity it looks slightly tatty
Bill Phillips: Almost moth eaten
My guess is there's a good reason for it, Bill, in the vein of what Elizabeth has suggested. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
Bill Phillips: You Yanks are such romantics grin

This is an image Ginnie would have taken, too. I am sure that there is a lady in the church community who would create a new cushion for the reverend.
Bill Phillips: I am sure there would be Philine and she would be pleased so to do.
I think it exactly right that we seem worn out cushion. It show that it has been used for some purpose or other .. and jnot just Been an ornament
Bill Phillips: There aren't that many purposes a cushion can be put to comrade
I like this, I sahould look for more shots like this in churches instead of the whole thing.
Bill Phillips: Some churches lend themselves to this type of picture Brian
Ha ha. Lots to see here.
Bill Phillips: I try to give value for money Mary
Last resting place for the Labour Party.

Probably something very valuable although Ray's answer is probably nearer the truth.
Bill Phillips: I think Ray may well be spot on
Shabby chic Bill....
Bill Phillips: I have plenty of shabby but it isn't very chic
Indeed - spend less time on the flower arranging and more on the sewing!
Bill Phillips: The flowers do look nice though Tom
