Droitwich Lions Club

Lions has been a big part of my life. almost accidentally really. Back in 1984 I was a member of the camera club in Droitwich (Shut up Shaw) and a good friend of mine Stan Jones, who was also a member said they were looking to start a Lions club in Droitwich and did I fancy coming to a meeting about it. Stan had been in Lions before he moved to Droitwich so I said I would go along with him.

To cut a long story short the club formed in February 1985 and we were presented with our charter in May. Stan and I were founder (charter) members along with another 20 odd people.

Sadly Stan died some years back and I still miss a very dear friend. Of the original members there are still 5 of us in the club. Some others have moved on and some have died. I am going to give you an idea of the clubs story over the next however long this series lasts.

I am looking forward to the series, Bill.

Are Lions Clubs some flavour of Masons?
Bill Phillips: Lions is open to all and is non sectarian and non political. In the far East it has rather become a status symbol which is a shame

I am looking forward to the series, Bill.

Are Lions Clubs some flavour of Masons?
Bill Phillips: Not at all Ray. Actually my dad was a Mason but I never fancied joining a secret society.

I look forward to your delve into the archives
Bill Phillips: I hope I don't disappoint. Some of the pictures are a bit ropey....what am I saying? What's new about that?
That's a long time to be part of something outside of the family/church, Bill. You can be very proud of your history and the the heritage of the Lions Club, which I assume is worldwide!
Bill Phillips: Over 200 countries Ginnie. It all began in 1917 in America

That is a long time of your life, and an important part too. I love to see the series and get to know more about the Lions Club
Bill Phillips: It is Lady P. Looking back we all look a lot younger!!
Hey remember me , I have just given you some of my images for your Lions club and you go and insult me..Crab bait comes to mind.
Bill Phillips: I was merely trying to prevent any jibes about my membership of the camera club. Your picture has pride (forgive the pun) of place on our website which I have just refurbished, so that it it is even more prominent. Honestly Michael you are becoming over-sensitive

You were a member of a camera club? Really? smile smile I would have thought that before becoming a Lion you will need to be been cub. Good for you for all the work you're done over the years.
Bill Phillips: I was chairman of the camera club for a couple of years. (hard to believe I know)
A nice idea Bill
Bill Phillips: Thanks John. I hope it doesn't bore everyone to death
Do you have any pictures from this Charter Presentation Dinner and Dance at the Raven Hotel, Bill? Looking forward to this series. The Lions Club does some very good and necessary work.
Bill Phillips: Sadly I don't Beverly. There must be some somewhere but it was long before the days of digital and phones with cameras!

I presume you joined shutterchance when you were expelled from the camera club. I am an admirer of your great work for the Lioms Bill.
Bill Phillips: I was expelled from the camera club long before I joined Shutterchance.

Thank you for the kind words about the Lions
It will be an interesting series, Bill and I look forward to it.
Bill Phillips: Well I hope so Pauline.
I look forward to seeing more about your Lions club Bill, it is obvious from your postings that the club, and what it does, mean a lot to you. I've said before there is a Lions Club in Shepshed who do no end of good works in the local area.
Bill Phillips: A bit of a ramble through the archive Brian but it might provoke a laugh or two!
What a wonderful memory!!
Bill Phillips: It is E
