University of Worcester

This is the old Castle Street Hospital. Now it is part of the University. The two nasty Travel Lodge like buildings are student accommodation. The old hospital site is important as it is here that Charles Hastings started the British Medical association

The building with the rounded end is the Jenny Lind Chapel named after the "Swedish Nightingale" It has been retained

Do they study important stuff here, Bill...or just the usual MBA-type trash?
Bill Phillips: Probably the latter Ray. I suspect they learn how to say things like "going forward" and how to misuse words like myself. They also need to be able to consume large quantities of coffee from a baby cup
The hospital is kind of a cool building isn't it!
Bill Phillips: It is a fine building and historically important Elizabeth

Great composition. Not much traffic on the road. Love the moody sky.
Bill Phillips: A rare gap!

To be honest I've seen worse than the new buildings. The old hospital is a wonderful example of functional architecture
Bill Phillips: So have I but that is no excuse

Oh, I recall these buildings (I liked the red brickstones), esp. the Jenny Lind Chapel -we have stood just here- but now all has been alienated by your processing talent! A fine photograph!
Bill Phillips: Originally the grounds in front were to have been landscaped with steps and terraces but they ran out of money
You know me and architecture, Bill...and this is why I love it so much!
Bill Phillips: I can't remember if we came here. I have a feeling not. It is just down from the Hive

A fascinating cityscape, Bill
Bill Phillips: Thanks Lisl. The Jenny Lind Chapel is well worth seeing
Lets hope some benefit comes to the students and they not all running up huge debts for a travel and tourism degree.
Bill Phillips: I did an HNC in business studies....briefly, on day release from work back in about 1969. One part of the course was Office organisation and it was clear the "lecturer" hadn't set foot in an office in 30 years.

I'm not keen on the building on the left Bill. It looks a bit like a prison.
Bill Phillips: You have been in there Chad and seen the chapel too

Most of central Scumsville is fully of thrown up modern student accommodation to cope with the kiddies attending "universities" that were called technical colleges when I was of that age. The old hospital is very attractive.
Bill Phillips: Southampton University proper is a fine University. Worcester is excellent for nurse training and was also a teacher training college at one time. Now it is taking over Worcester. Still it brings jobs I suppose
The old building on the left is quite attractive. Reminds me of the old psychiatric hospital I worked in in the early 70's. It is torn down now.
Bill Phillips: It has the look of an institution but is historically important in the UK
I have found the perfect rest home for you in Westward Ho, a short walk in the gardens and you are over the cliff edge.
Bill Phillips: Westward Ho! has an exclamation mark. It is the only place in the world that does. Apart from that it is a dump
A terrific moody shot Bill!
Bill Phillips: Thank you kindly Richard

A good thing they use the travel lodge style. Otherwise students may get the idea they can stay forever.

Great shot. Why do they paint the road markings in a zig-zag manner? I hope it is not how one is supposed to drive.
Bill Phillips: In Worcester they don't need telling to drive like that
Lovely composition in black and white Bill!
Bill Phillips: Thank you kindly Ronky
A real difference between the two types of architecture isn't there. Lougborough is fast becoming full of blocks of student accommodation like that on the right, there are far too many students for the accommodation on the campus, and in parts of the centre of town local residents are swamped by students and all that implies, especially at weekends!
Bill Phillips: Same in Worcester. St Johns is full of students and the other residents are not all very happy about it
Nice bit of mono hdr, Bill.
Bill Phillips: It isn't bad Tom. grin

The comparison between old and new architecture is a stark one

I've seen a lot worse Bill, passed the University lodgings in Bedford - they were so bad even Ingrid was taking photos of them from the car as we drove by!
