Severn Valley Railway 7

Some random stuff from a visit to the Severn Valley railway.

Tiffo or Brian will correct me it I am wrong, but this is an LNER wooden carriage from about 1938 which I think was built at Saltley Works.

I really like the wood paneling - very pretty! Frank might have an idea...

All I remember is that I remember travelling in these sort of carriages ... I always imagined being in one with the blinds down alone with a girlfriend .... Sigh oh well imagination is a wonderful thing and always creates the impossible dream.
Bill Phillips: Nothing wrong with a bit of a fantasy comrade

Unlikely to be Saltley, more likely Doncaster or York. A fine thing, better than Master Mottingham's cars
Bill Phillips: In the finest traditions of shutterchance I have done some research. This carriage is almost certainly Doncaster, but there is I think an open carriage that was built in Birmingham by Birmingham Railway Carriage and
Wagon Company or by Metro-Cammell.

Tiff will correct you if you are right Bill. This is my sort of carriage, I would have this all to myself.
Bill Phillips: How would you achieve that.....or do I really want to know?

a very comfortable sofa for the 3rd class -or is the 3rd class the luxe class in England? - in any case no sofa for Ratty and Chris!
Bill Phillips: No 3rd class was for common folk Philine
If that's a 3rd class carriage it wasn't at all bad was it
Bill Phillips: Very acceptable and more comfortable than most nowadays
The upholstery is rather more strident than I recall - but I used to love travelling in these as a lad.
Bill Phillips: I only really travelled on Western region in the 60s, but I always like corridor coaches
I can certainly remember travelling in carriages like this to and from London when my parents took me on trips in the late 40's/early 50's, but as to its provenance I'm not sure. I used to love all the little pictures of places above the seats, and some carriages had little lamps above each seat as well i recall.
Bill Phillips: I think the SVR teak coaches come from Doncaster, York and Birmingham Brian THe Birmingham one is I believe an open 3rd class carriage
And very charming it is.
Bill Phillips: Comfortable too
A wonderful cosy corner Bill!
Bill Phillips: It was very comfortable Richard

Every year in the 50s I used to travel in something like this every year from Crewe to Portsmouth and back
Bill Phillips: Well everyone needs a hobby Lisl

I immediately thought that it was one of the teak coaches; what a delight it is. I hear rumours that 3rd class is coming back on the East Coast mainline; I had actually realised that it was done away with. All my UK rail travel seems to 3rd class!
Bill Phillips: It is indeed. Just wait until we have HS2 Vast empty trains that only the very few will be able to afford.
That was the age when travel was glamorous and civilised.
Bill Phillips: Indeed it was Pauline. Somehow Virgin Trains just doesn't have the same ring as the London and North Eastern Railway
