Teignmouth Pier

It is a strange and perhaps British thing, but for many people it seems going on holiday consists of going to the seaside and spending most of your time in an amusement arcade. This one is on Teignmouth Pier and the machines don't seem to be much different to what they were when I was a kid!

Not a lot of folks on holiday, today, then...
Bill Phillips: It was only just opening Ray. Probably packed later!
LOL at Ray... i can't understand why they have amusement arcades on the piers Bill... they take away the room for the fishermen....petersmile
Bill Phillips: Mick and his son fish at Teignmouth but I don't know if they do it from the pier

I am always intrigued by the term AMUSEMENT because these are places devoid of that element for me. In fact looking at your picture convinces me that to visit such a place is a form of insanity.

Unless you are Mick Shaw
Bill Phillips: I don't think Mr Shaw plays on the machines he just does doom laden pictures of the outside
If its not broke Dont fix, I mean look at you ,you are still here..You can't fish off the pier.Armagedon just hit New Brighton.
Bill Phillips: When you say can't fish off the pier is that because it is not allowed or it is physically impossible?

Never been to New Brighton but the one on the south coast is horrible

Oh yes, I saw and observed some scenes in those amusements in Bournemouth, Tintagel ... - it is a 'strange' thing for sure. Only the laughing clown is a some funny.
Chris is absolutely right!
Bill Phillips: Some people spend a lot of time in them, still each to their own I guess
They must still provide a steady income stream, as a child I was drawn to them, but have since learnt the folly and futility of gambling.
Bill Phillips: We all tried them as kids but never winning soon cured me!
It used to be the Penny Arcade, but I bet few machines take pennies nowadays Bill.
Bill Phillips: I doubt it Sally. I bet most eat pound coins at least!

I bet there is not one for rolling proper pennies down a wood sliding then getting 2d back in cash if you were very lucky. I can recall my first black and white video game... All very whizzy. The beach for me these days is best in winter.
Bill Phillips: I like the beach in winter. On a bright winter's day it can be great. We had that tennis game!

This is so dreadful I thought I was back in Weston for a moment Bill.
Bill Phillips: You would make a good bingo caller.

I can't imagine even looking in the door if there was water the other direction.
Bill Phillips: I only looked in the interest of photojournalism Mary grin

Not uniquely British. What we do when on holiday at the seaside:
1) Lay around getting a tan.
2) Once burnt, keep in the shade and read a book.
3) When thirsty, open the cool box and have few beers.
4) Because this is leisure work, you send the kids to an amusement arcade and tell them to watch out for strange looking uncles, handing out sweets.
5) After a week of this, you travel home and when you stop for a hamburger, you get out and leave your skin on the vinyl seats.
Bill Phillips: I don't like sunbathing. Beers sound good. Vinyl seats????

One day, you can accompany little Joseph to such a place.
Bill Phillips: I hope not!

Does this bring back happy memories, Bil? I used to like the penny arcades on Southsea Front
Bill Phillips: I remember going in them at Dawlish Warren but I think we were chasing the female holidaymakersgringringrin I never seemed to catch many though
These awful places are like manna to kids unfortunately, especially growing up Grandchildren!!
Bill Phillips: I spent a bit of time in them as a kid but the novelty soon wore off
To be avoided at all costs
Bill Phillips: Well I'm not keen on them Janet
Not my type of holiday Bill!
Bill Phillips: Nor mine but there are plenty of good things in Teignmouth
Do you spend your money in here, Mr Bill?
Bill Phillips: No way! It cost me enough buying Mick Shaw coffee!

nope, not much changed since i was there either!
Bill Phillips: Hahaha I don't think it changes much
I've never been mad on them Bill; I'd rather be outside fishing smile
Bill Phillips: So would I Martin...and I don't even like fishing grin
