In 1757, Hanway wrote about this landscape garden: "In this delicious abode are no Chinese works, no monsters of imagination, no deviations from nature, under the fond notions of fashion or taste; all is grand, or simple, or a beautiful mixture of both."
Bill Phillips: I think he was totally right
I must post my Stourhead images from 30 months ago.
Bill Phillips: This one is only last summer, but no reason not to dip back into the archives and pull out some undoubted gems from your visit Mr Trim
A stunning shot Bill
Bill Phillips: Thanks Janet. Stourhead is one of my favourite places

And I'm sure she will like it, as do I
Bill Phillips: She does and i am pleased you like it too
You are spoiling Philine, Bill - a beautiful shot!
Bill Phillips: she deserves to be spoiled smile
You've captured the exquisite beauty of Stourhead brilliantly in this shot, Bill. It's clearly evident why Turner and other artists were compelled to put brush to canvas.
Bill Phillips: It is the most wonderful of gardens Beverly
A perfect day and composition to match.
Bill Phillips: It was a glorious morning but went right off in the afternoon as I recall!
This lovely image is prompting me to think that Maureen and I should book an overnight stay somewhere and visit Stourhead, I think it is quite a long trip for a day out from us.
Bill Phillips: If you haven't been then you are in for a treat. It is stunning Brian

I know that she will appreciate this; it is a real delight. Some hints of autumn and some cloud the help that sky.
Bill Phillips: It was taken in mid September as I recall
A fine day and landscape Bill
Bill Phillips: We were lucky. arrived early in perfect weather which went right off later
I'm sure she 'll be very pleased. Must have cost you a fortune.
Bill Phillips: Set me back a bob or two Graeme
A perfect day for a boat outing Bill!
Bill Phillips: It would be a shame to disturb the water Richard grin

EEEUCH.

Mind you I didn't like the place much. All too manicured and perfect for my warped taste.

Technically fine btw.
Bill Phillips: Hahahaha I love Stourhead and its' manicured perfection.

A delightful landscape - we often walk in the environs, still on the estate, but away from the gardens - the whole area is stunning
Bill Phillips: It is indeed Lisl. A gem!

Formal gardens are of quite more 'manicured perfection' - look at the tall, old trees you can see in Stourhead Gardens - it is designed, indeed, but in a very natural looking way, and there are also meadows with cows and rotten trees... Today I must disagree with Mike, sadly!
Bill Phillips: I disagree with him too. It is beautifully maintained but not in the way a formal garden is.
Wow, you have caught this well Bill. Isn't it a fabulous place.
Bill Phillips: It is Sally, one of my favourite places
So very gorgeous!
Bill Phillips: It is a beautiful place Mary
