photoblog image The Boston stump

The Boston stump

St Botolph's church in Boston is a gem. Known as the Boston stump, the Chuch was started in 1309 but the famous tower was started in about 1425 but not completed until about 1520!  This picture starts a short series of images of Boston from a brief visit when I decided Skegness was not for me!

PS For our American cousins, this is the original Boston in Lincolnshire Smile

The external walls look rather thin, Bill...are there buttresses on the outside?
Bill Phillips: Ummmm probably
Very ornate!!
Bill Phillips: Not bad for a parish church!

Oh yes, it must be a grandious, graceful looking church - inside it doesn't look like a 'stump' - erected till the wonderful ceiling, and so much light is streaming in through the (partly stained) glass windows! Every detail may be a gem like the screen, the altar sculptures... (Why did you twiddle it a bit?)
Bill Phillips: Twiddled to bring out the detail Philine. I particularly like the ceiling
such rich details in these churches... marvelous
Bill Phillips: It is a lovely church, I had vaguely heard of it before but didn't realise it was this good

You visit was so brief that you did not have time to stand centrally in the church for the photograph Bill. Very impressive all the same.
Bill Phillips: I was running when i took this Chad

We have actually been to Boston - but I cannot remember a thing about it apart from the canals. Never went inside the Stump thats for sure. Amazing quantity of glass!
Bill Phillips: It is a pleasant little town with this rather splendid church
When a church is this ornate, I'm sure I would not be listening to a word the priest was saying. Too much to see.
Bill Phillips: I wouldn't be listening even if it was all painted grey grin

Looks very grand, Bill. The mind bogles at the amount of work that must have gone in to the figures alone.

So Skegness not to your taste? wink
Bill Phillips: Skeggie is awful
Tremendously ornate, isn't it - a bit of hdr bringing out the texture?
Bill Phillips: Bit of basic tone mapping
I'd never have believed the church was this beautiful inside, certainly much more attractive than 'Skeggie' as the locals round my way call it. I look forward to the rest of this series having driven by the Stump several times.
Bill Phillips: Skeggie is awful...worse than Mablethorpe!

Fabulous internal decoration, a sight to see, lovely Bill smile
Bill Phillips: It was a surprise. I hadn't expected anything this good!
Incredible workmanship, so beautifully captured. Well done, Bill!
Bill Phillips: Thank you Beverly. It is a beautiful building
am loving the details in this wide space
Bill Phillips: It was a most impressive building
Rather grand, plenty of light.
I missed this one Bill....you have done this beautiful church justice with you lighting and detail....petersmile
