It's got bells on!

I was sorting out some books, one of which had an old newspaper form 1943 as a dustjacket. Well it has lasted for 68 years so don't knock it!

This short article caught my eye. I can't find anything about councillor Archie Brooks but he was clearly away with the fairies.

He could have attached a bicycle bell somewhere... LOL
Bill Phillips: It is hard to imagine what he might have done!

I think you should be fitted with little bells to warn people of your imminence
Bill Phillips: so they could be ready to bow or curtsey as appropriate

A nice story you are telling! 'dustjacket'- what a nice English word! - and an interesting newspaper article from 1943! - if Sir Archie Brooks knew how many "bells" and how much noise is daily surrounding us! But little bells of music notes (for example from Beethoven's 9th symphony or...) would not jar on my ears!
(I'm away for some days at a Handel Festival, finishing with fireworks and his music)
Bill Phillips: I envy you going to the Handel festival. I hope you have a lovely time
We need more people like Archie Brookes ... a bit of docile insanity would keep a smile on our faces.
Bill Phillips: Luckily he wasn't in charge of national defence at the time

No seriously I think this is a brilliant idea smile Why stop at tiny bells?
Bill Phillips: You could play little tunes as you came round the corner

Only for dear Stanley: Halle/Saale is not only Handel- town, but also salt town:
"Salt, also known as White Gold, was extracted from four "Borns" (well-like structures). The four Borns/brine named Gutjahrbrunnen, Meteritzbrunnen, Deutscher Born and Hackeborn, were located around the Hallmarket (or "Under Market"), now a market square with a fountain, ... The brine was highly concentrated and boiled in Koten, simple structured houses made from reed and clay. Salters, who wore a unique uniform with eighteen silver buttons, were known as Halloren, and this name was later used for the chocolates in the shape of these buttons.
The Halloren-Werke, the oldest chocolate factory in Germany, was founded in 1804. Old documents are on display and a chocolate room can be visited at Delitzscher Street 70. The original "Halloren-Kugeln" are sold in a box of eighteen little pralines."
Bill Phillips: Stanley would have appreciated this. I miss his daily blog and comments. Tiff's is far less interesting

So if that idea took hold we would be hearing bells as people greeted their mates, or the really annoying tooting as you leave a friends house. Might prefer the bells.
Bill Phillips: Now that has some merit. I hate it when people parp their horn as they leave!
I love finding these old newspapers and reading all the strange ideas.
Bill Phillips: It is fascinating. We were given some Meccano magazines from 1964 recently, they made fascinating reading!
1943!! YOu save stuff
Bill Phillips: LOL!! This was on a book that was donated to our book salegrin
They should do the same with cameras smile
Bill Phillips: Especially when the flash is about to go off!
Sounds like he was in Noddy and Big Ears land
Bill Phillips: Well is was Birmingham grin
It's great finding old bits of newspaper and reading then reports, everything seemed so simple back then.
Bill Phillips: By comparison I think it was!

LOL. I have a horn to warn pedestrians. I would like a switch so that I could switch it on when entering a town and switch off when leaving! Alternatively, pedestrians could be fitted with eyes and a brain..
Bill Phillips: Alternatively, pedestrians could be fitted with eyes and a brain.....yeah that's not going to happen
Even some bicycle riders dont use their bells these days!
I would get confused having different bells to ring lol smile
Bill Phillips: I suppose people went a lot slower in those days so had time to select which bell to ring.

Bring back the man walking in front waving a red flag I say!

He didn't anticipate that we might need to ban the car altogether.
Bill Phillips: Trouble is we have politicians who tell us to use the bus then cut the services!
I am a sucker for book sales, Bill, and am thrilled when I come across something like this. The older, the better.
Bill Phillips: We get all sorts of books donated and some of them date back to the late 1800s. We never get tired of going through them!
I commented on this the other day and thought that you have done an excellent job with the photo of the 68 year old dust jacket Bill....and i was also wondering why Archie just didn't ask his ferries to make him the bellgrin....petersmile
Councillor Archie would no doubt approve of my rattling old motor. Probably not as melodic as he imagined.
