photoblog image Gulls over the Severn

Gulls over the Severn

It is well known by some that I am not fond of gulls. It is less well known that I don't take many bird pictures. The two are not connected. I am not very good at taking bird pictures. The damned things keep flying off.

The water is nice though

That's the trouble with birds. They fly. You're right about the water and you've managed to capture these birds in a very lively pose.
Bill Phillips: They should sit still when I want to photograph them or at least hover!

Yup! Nice water!

Not bad gulls, too!
Bill Phillips: As gulls go I suppose

You said it all (like on Chad's blog)- yes, I like the beautifully golden- blue sparkling water and the movements there and in the air -you are a good bird photographer!
Bill Phillips: You haven't seen the 50 other pictures that I took trying to get thistongue
Ballet dancers, very nice!!!
Bill Phillips: They don't half move quick!

You obviously relish a challenge: this isn't a bad effort

It's come out well, Bill. I like the colours in the water and you've got the lead bird nicely in focus. The one of the right making a steep left turn and climb could have helped by moving closer to the lead bird, though.
Bill Phillips: I could cut a bit out of the water and paste it back together I suppose

I am not some of those one or one of those sum or some or one or someone oh I don't know but I did not know, nowt, nufink. My advice is to try photographing other things.
Bill Phillips: Your advice is sage as always Chad, but, of course, I shall totally ignore it.
I would be pleased if I had taken this one. Perhaps their posing for you will make you a bit more appreciative of them.
Bill Phillips: LOL!! They are noisy, aggressive and very well adapted to living alongside people

You've managed to capture these well enough but I know what you mean - not the easiest of subjects! Lovely colours.
Bill Phillips: and patience isn't one of my strong pointstongue
I would call this a terrific action shot Bill, it's really pleasing. I think the depth of focussing is perfect really
Bill Phillips: Thanks Stanley, I'm very pleased you like it

I would be very proud to have this as mine
Bill Phillips: Thanks mate. I'm quite pleased with it, mind you it took about 50 shots to get this one!
A reasonably lucky break here Bill.
Bill Phillips: Luck??? Well random pointing and clicking might be called luck i suppose
You have captured these gulls very well in flight Bill. It is not easy to photograph birds they are always on the move. Lovely reflections in water.
Bill Phillips: They are very inconsiderate and should learn to hover more
The water does, indeed, look fantastic, almost liquid metal, but the birds too doing aerial acrobatics make this shot!
Bill Phillips: They are very clever fliers I have to say
Yeah, flowers are much more static, aren't they - you got this one well!
Bill Phillips: Even flowers wave about if the wind is blowing...now National trust buildings...they don't tend to move!
Yes the water is fine Bill but you've been about as lucky as I would have been with the birds, pesky things.
Bill Phillips: I lack the patience Brian

Good enough for me Bill - I am even worse at bird pics and I hate gulls with a passion.
Bill Phillips: Yes i detest them, although you have to admire how they have adapted to people as a source of their food!
Not easy critters to capture on the wing, especially when they start dive bombing. I blame my the camera's tracking abilitysmile
You have to start taking more pics of birds. Never say you are not good at taking bird pics, this one is very good. Remember, it can only get better. Trial and error and one day you will get the perfect shot.
Bill Phillips: I lack the patiencetongue buildings don't usually move! Much easier
At least you don't have a blank picture like I do, you captured them well Bill smile
Bill Phillips: This was a case of if I take enough I might actually get a bird in one of them!

For a bloke that doesn't like gulls, this is a great capture
Bill Phillips: LOL!! The pesky things were everywhere!
