Dear old Norman Tebbit told the unemployed that his dad had got on his bike in the 30's depression until he found a job. He didn't riot.

I very much doubt if he understood much at all in all honesty. I do however like your picture. Is this bicycle Valhalla by any chance?

Tebbit is a smug arrogant pompous .... I shan't go on as I don't want to get upset by spending time thinking about him.

Wonderful image of a wonderful old bike ... Rod brakes that failed frequently, a seat that ripped your bum to pieces, a bike chain that coated your trousers with oil. But you were safe because you had a reflector and pedestrians were safe 'cause you had to have a bell .

The lighting is just wonderful, Bill. How fun! You know me...such a fan of bicycles. smile
Bill Phillips: Ange always rode her bike to work, and had a child seat on the back when the children were little. She still has a bike and rides it regularly.

What you do with the fact that you are unemployed is a state of mind. What remains true, is that you have a lot of time on your hands.
Bill Phillips: I have been there a couple of times and made a job out of finding a job. The worst thing is not knowing how long it will last. In my case I was out of work for 6 months both times.

Did I tell you that I was born in Willington Quay? Only a pedestrian tunnel away from Jarrow. I was born in 1951, still within the era of rationing from the second world war. However, like so many families in the North East, the Great Depression had a huge impact on my parents and grandparents. It has only been in the last ten years, when I have been researching my family history, that I have begun to get a grasp on the social and ecconomic history of the North East. It is a fascinating subject.

As for Norman Tebbit, history is littered with famous people who`s ill-advised comments will haunt them.
Bill Phillips: The north south divide is still very strong. I am convinced that many people in the south east think anyone north of Watford wears clogs and should be patronised by idiots like Tebbit

Yes, it is a very serious issue- and it may be very difficult to depicture such a sad situation (RT tried it sometimes by his street photography) - but I know some persons who had to suffer from that ... During the Evensong on 4th September 2010 the Dean of Wells Cathedral announced the very sad news that during one week a lot of people got unemployed in Somerset and he complainted very much the cuttings allover with their consequences for the individuals and their families...
I like your picture of this old bike leaning against an old wall - why not b&w?
Bill Phillips: I worry about the effect of the current spending cuts. We bail out the bankers with millions and they promptly start paying themselves huge bonuses which are as much as I would earn in about 20 years and now the rest of the people who paid to bail them out face the possibility of losing their jobs.

I like the monotone colour so left it like this and not as a b&w
I don't know but his dad did. Is it me or does anyone else feel that the proposed cuts just aren't going far enough?

Love the old relic Baron, the treatment suits and give great atmosphere... I love to be on a bike but the weather is against me at the moment smile

I think I got on my bike looking for a job after leaving school. It didn't work. Newspaper ads were the way to go. The ambiance suits the bike
Bill Phillips: I'd have had to ride from Exeter to Slough for the only interview I got when I applied for jobs when I left school. Luckily I got the job and had the use of a car to go for the interview!

Quite right, too! Might stop them sitting around watching TV and eating burgers all day! I bet that bike weights about four times what mine does!

A right boneshaker Bill, my first bike was like this, I soon changed it for a more respectable Claud Butler.

Very good shot Bill, I like the shadows giving it a dark feel. There is unemployed and unemployed. The first is those who are unlucky enough to lose their jobs through no fault of their own and look for another one, then there is the other sort like the lazy sod, who lives next door to my son and his partner and children, who won't get a job, receives benefits and churns out another child almost annually.

Very good image bill this bike looks well past its sell buy date I wnder if it is a BSA
