I've cropped this every which way, gone b&w and all sorts of variations. Then I thought It looked wonderful as it was. This is as good a picture as I could get and I hope it gives you some idea of how lovely it was.

The composition is spot on, but what caused the halos around the branches?

I wasn't sure whether the halos were an intentional effect. I quite like them - they make the scene look frosty. It would be interesting to see the intended version.
Bill Phillips: Thanks Ian..they weren't intended. I've just looked at the original picture and the tree is basically a silhouette. I think I prefer this!!

Compositionally, it is very good and I like the beautiful subtle light. The branches do look a little unrealistic though.

I thought it was me seeing the halos on those tree branches. I really like the composition Bill.

I wonder - did you use site sharpening when you uploaded it?
Bill Phillips: I never use the upload sharpening I do it in photoshop. So it is all my faultsmile Actually I think I like the halo so I'm glad you do. Thanks Ellie
